Man Utd loses 4th in row at Stoke

LONDON: Louis van Gaal hinted that he could vacate the Old Trafford hot seat after watching Stoke City swat aside his timid Manchester United team 2-0 in the Premier League yesterday.
Goals from Stoke forwards Bojan Krkic and Marko Arnautovic punished United for a dreadful start at a blustery Britannia Stadium and although the visitors improved in the second half they could not repair the damage.
Dutchman Van Gaal has now overseen a seven-match winless run in which United have been eliminated from the Champions League and fallen out of the Premier League’s top four after successive defeats by Bournemouth, Norwich City and Stoke.
Having criticised the media and stormed angrily out of his pre-match news conference on Wednesday, there was an air of resignation about Van Gaal’s comments after the loss-United’s fourth in a row in all competitions.
“The club doesn’t have to fire or sack me-sometimes I do it by myself,” the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager told reporters.
Minutes earlier, he had been asked if he still thought he was the man to turn around United’s season and whether he had the support of United’s hierarchy.
“It’s more difficult because I’m also part of the four matches we have lost and so people are looking at me,” Van Gaal told Sky Sports. “It’s another situation, we have lost the fourth game, we will have to wait and see,” he added with a lingering glare towards the reporter.
United, down to sixth in the Premier League, face struggling champions Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday and few would be surprised if Van Gaal was no longer in charge.
Stoke manager Mark Hughes had spoken this week of his days as a marauding United striker under Alex Ferguson when the side approached every game expecting to win it and he would have been surprised by his side’s early dominance.
SWASHBUCKLING FOOTBALL
The 20-times English champions have traditionally been associated with swashbuckling attacking football, but apart from a brief flurry after the break when Van Gaal brought his captain Wayne Rooney off the bench, they were woefully short of belief or leadership.
Van Gaal looked powerless as he clutched his notes while sitting uneasily on the bench next to assistant Ryan Giggs.
The biggest indictment of the malaise afflicting England’s biggest club was Van Gaal’s belief that his expensively-assembled team “did not dare to play football in the first half.”
Stoke’s opener after 19 minutes summed up a truly awful first half for United. Attempting to knock a bouncing ball back to his goalkeeper David de Gea with a diving header, Memphis Depay only succeeded in gifting the ball to Stoke right back Glen Johnson who crossed for Bojan to stab home.
It got even worse for United when Bojan’s free kick was blocked and with no defender closing down Arnautovic he thundered a shot past De Gea.
England striker Rooney spiced up United’s attack after the break but Marouane Fellaini wasted their best chance when he shot straight at Stoke keeper Jack Butland from close range.
At the final whistle Van Gaal gave a brief wave to United’s travelling fans. The next few days will reveal whether it was his parting gesture. – Reuters

LONDON: Diego Costa scored twice as Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by Watford at Stamford Bridge yesterday in Guus Hiddink’s first game in charge as temporary manager.
Costa put his side ahead and his second goal mid-way through the second half rescued a point after a Troy Deeney penalty and an Odion Ighalo effort had put Watford ahead.
But had Oscar not skied a penalty high over the bar with 10 minutes remaining, Hiddink might have marked his return to west London with victory. Hiddink is back at the club after a previous stint in charge in 2009 as Chelsea attempt to recover from Jose Mourinho’s departure. The early signs suggest that he intends to adopt a more adventurous approach than his predecessor, with Oscar, Willian and Pedro Rodriguez encouraged to get forward in support of lone striker Costa here. The proactive approach almost reaped dividends within four minutes when Pedro flashed in a cross from the right.
Costa, outjumping Allan Nyom, was first to the ball, but his header cleared the crossbar of Hornets goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes. Though much has been made of Chelsea’s attacking struggles, their defensive frailities have been as much a factor in their slide towards the relegation places.
Twice the visitors had decent chances to open the scoring. Both efforts fell to live-wire Nigerian forward Ighalo, his first an instinctive volley that flashed wide and the second a delicate header that failed to trouble Thibaut Courtois.
Hiddink had suggested that he might turn to graduates from Chelsea’s impressive youth academy to give the club an injection of vim, but he kept faith with the stalwarts against Watford and they combined for the opening goal in the 32nd minute.
HAZARD IMPACT
Willian’s right-wing corner was knocked on by a combination of John Terry’s head and Gary Cahill’s shoulder to Costa, who volleyed home from close range. It was his first goal in over a month.
But the Blues managed to shoot themselves in the foot three minutes before the break when an innocuous corner from Ben Watson was misjudged by Nemanja Matic, who allowed the ball to bounce off his arm. It was a clear penalty and visiting captain Deeney despatched the spot-kick with consummate ease.
John Mikel Obi, one of three survivors from Hiddink’s previous reign-the others being Terry and Branislav Ivanovic-replaced Cesc Fabregas at half-time.
But it was the visitors who restarted the game on the front foot and deservedly took the lead 11 minutes into the second period. Ivanovic, shorn of any confidence this season, was pulled out of position following the run of Deeney.
This allowed Ighalo the freedom to race into the vacated right-back position and he left fly, his left-footer clipping Cahill and zipping past a slightly embarrassed Courtois.
England’s festive games have a habit of producing goals and this one did not disappoint as the Blues restored parity within nine minutes. Willian bisected the Watford rearguard and Costa steamed through, taking a touch and lofting the ball over Gomes.
Eden Hazard entered the fray with 16 minutes to play and was immediately in the action when he was hauled down by Watford substitute Valon Behrami in the penalty area.

Benteke hands Liverpool victory over Leicester
LIVERPOOL: Christian Benteke’s second-half strike made all the difference as Liverpool beat Premier League leaders Leicester City in a 1-0 victory at Anfield yesterday.
This was Leicester’s second visit to Merseyside inside a week after last Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Everton but they went home empty-handed this time around following an encounter that Liverpool dominated.
Liverpool went into this contest having picked up a solitary point from their last three matches and manager Jurgen Klopp was only too aware that a victory was needed if their resurgence since the German’s arrival was to continue.
In a bright opening period, Liverpool went closest after just three minutes when Philippe Coutinho’s curling effort from 25 yards just drifted wide of Kasper Schmeichel’s far post.
Although Liverpool could not break down Leicester’s defence early on, they appeared the more composed side as Coutinho and Emre Can pulled the strings going forward.
However, Leicester’s resolute defence has been a highlight of their season and Wes Morgan and Robert Huth, back in the side after a hamstring problem, both remained strong at the back.
After 15 minutes, Coutinho again had a decent opportunity but blasted over following impressive work from Divock Origi while Adam Lallana then thrashed wide just 60 seconds later as Liverpool surged forward.
Can was the next Liverpool player to threaten as Schmeichel had to be at his best to keep out his low curling effort before Origi also went close at the near post.
BEST CHANCE
Leicester barely had any possession and could not unleash Premier League top-scorer Jamie Vardy on the home side to any effect while Riyad Mahrez and Shinji Okazaki were equally as quiet.
Liverpool’s quest for goals was not helped, however, when Origi had to come off with seven minutes of the first half remaining but the fact that £32.5m striker Benteke replaced him underlined the strength in depth Klopp has at his disposal.
Leicester’s best chance in the opening 45 minutes fell towards half-time as Mahrez’s trickery led him inside the Liverpool box but Simon Mignolet-back in the side after missing last weekend’s 3-0 loss to Watford-did well to turn the shot over the crossbar.
In the second half, Benteke continued to be a nuisance to Huth and Morgan while Can and Coutinho also probed the away team”s defence until, finally, Benteke gave Liverpool the lead after 63 minutes.
Roberto Firmino’s low cross from the left was met by Benteke first time and he slid his effort past Schmeichel.
Leicester desperately pushed for an equaliser and Liverpool had Mignolet to thank for a brilliant point-blank save from Nathan Dyer with 16 minutes remaining.
Anfield became increasingly nervy as the end approached yet both teams, to their credit, continued to push forward whenever they could. Can smashed one effort high into the Kop from outside the box while Mahrez continued to run hard for Leicester in a bid to break down Liverpool at the back.
As the end approached, a long throw by Christian Fuchs caused confusion in the Liverpool box but Mignolet recovered well but that was as close as Leicester got.
Henderson then squandered one glorious chance late on as he opted to pass rather than shoot with the Leicester goal at his mercy before Benteke did the same in the dying seconds and although that enraged Anfield, Liverpool’s fans ultimately went home happy.

Chelsea vs Aston Villa: Branislav Ivanovic injury a potential positive for Jose Mourinho

Branislav Ivanovic
Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic's hamstring injury could be a blessing in disguise for Jose Mourinho after the Serbia international's tough start to the campaign, according to Harry Redknapp. Ivanovic is expected to miss at least three weeks after suffering the blow during the 2-0 European Championship qualifying win over Albania.
After scans and treatment at the Blues' Cobham training ground, the 31-year-old appears to have been ruled out of the visit of Aston Villa this weekend. Ivanovic could end up missing seven games in all, including the Champions League double-header against Dynamo Kiev and the visit of Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool on 31 October.
Ivanovic has been among Chelsea's poorest performers this term and has played a central role in the club losing four of their opening eight Premier League games in the worst start to a titledefence for 20 years. Mourinho has hesitated from dropping Ivanovic and deploying Cesar Azpilicueta at right-back, apparently due to his lack of confidence in new signings Baba Rahman and Papy Djilobodji, who should both be capable of deputising for the Spaniard.
But with Ivanovic, one of the standout players from the last campaign which saw Chelsea win the league title and the Capital One Cup, set for a spell on the sidelines, former Spurs manager Redknapp feels his time off from the game could benefit the defender in the long run. The ex-Lokomotiv Moscow man is being urged to analyse his game to help cut out his mistakes.
"Branislav Ivanovic's injury could be a good thing for Chelsea," Redknapp told the Evening Standard. "A year ago, he was probably the best right-back in the Premier League but he has had one shocker after another for so long that it might do him some good to be out of the spotlight for a while.
"Jose Mourinho will talk to him about his game and what is letting him down at the moment. But there won't be much he can say that Ivanovic doesn't already know because he has been around long enough and won everything there is to win.
"You can show him bits and pieces in video analysis, whether positionally he was poor or if he allowed someone to cut inside and get a shot off too easily. But ultimately it is about confidence. Ivanovic was a top defender and he's only 31. He is not quite at an age yet where his body is in decline so confidence is probably the issue.
"It is like anything in life, if you feel good about yourself you can do anything. Things come off for you. When you aren't, you make more mistakes because you lack self-belief. Maybe he can use this enforced break to analyse his game, rediscover his confidence and come back stronger."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho facing fresh injury blow after Nemanja Matic and Branislav Ivanovic knocks

The Blues could be without the pair after both of them failed to finish Serbia's brutal qualifier with Albania on Thursday night.

Beleaguered Jose Mourinho fears a fresh double blow after Nemanja Matic and Branislav Ivanovic limped out of Serbia's Euro 2016 qualifying win over Albania on Thursday night.
The Chelsea boss, who has just eight points from his first eight games, is already without first-choice keeper Thibaut Courtois until December.
Now he could be without his Serbian contingent after Ivanovic came off after 65 minutes of the 2-0 victory in Tirana with a hamstring problem.
Matic was withdrawn eight minutes later with what is believed to be a similar issue.
Both players will be assessed before a decision is taken on whether they will return to Chelsea for treatment.
The crocked squad: Chelsea's two Serbians did not finish the match
But it is a fresh blow for Mourinho who is under pressure after the worst start to a season at Stamford Bridge in the Abramovich era.
Chelsea play host to Aston Villa when the international break ends and the match is one that the Blues, ten points behind leaders Manchester City, have to win.
Jose Mourinho
Concerns: Mourinho has seen his squad stretched through injury
While fans and pundits have called for Ivanovic in particular to be replaced before his current injury, Mourinho has stuck by him as he feels summer signing Baba Rahman is not yet ready to cope with the physical nature of the English top flight.
Mourinho was forced to defend himself against claims last weekend that he had humiliated Nemanja Matic after replacing the midfielder soon after sending him on as a substitute in the home defeat to Southampton.

Chelsea injury news: Diego Costa to return but Branislav Ivanovic and Thibaut Courtois definitely out against Aston Villa

Diego Costa is back in contention to return to the Chelsea starting line-up against Aston Villa with his three-match suspension now completed.
The Spanish striker was banned retrospectively for lashing out at Gabriel Paulista when Chelsea beat Arsenal on 19 September, but has seen through that ban after missing the League Cup win against Walsall, the draw at Newcastle and the Southampton defeat.
Jose Mourinho confirmed that Branislav Ivanovic and Thibaut Courtois are the squad's only injury concerns.
"We have only Ivanovic injury and Courtois recovering. Everybody else is available," he said at his pre-match press conference.
Ivanovic was injured while on international duty for Serbia in midweek, while No 1 goalkeeper Courtois is likely to be out until early December because of his knee problem.
Jose Mourinho is under more pressure ahead of the must-win game with Villa afte reports emerged of a 'mutiny' in the Chelsea dressing room.
With Ivanovic out Mourinho said he has "four solutions", although he strangely omitted £14million Baba Rahman as one of those, instead naming a teenage youth player.
"I have four solutions," he said. " I have Azpilicueta. I have the adaptation of [Kurt] Zouma or Ramires and I have Ola Aina, who is 18 years old."

Jose Mourinho analyses victory over Aston Villa, Eden Hazard and Branislav Ivanovic replacement

Mourinho talks performance, dropping Eden Hazard, and Loftus-Cheek substitution.

Chelsea returned to winning ways thanks to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.
Diego Costa and an Alan Hutton own-goal gave the Blues all three points in the first game back after the international break.
Here's what Jose had to say...

The performance

"We were not brilliant but we were solid.
"In football you can be brilliant when the confidence is high and the players are able to put on the pitch all qualities.
"When confidence is low and the results are not good players feel the pressure of the moment the quality goes down. You have to bring other ingredients to the game and the did it in an amazing way.
"Defensively we had great discipline, effort and balance in team. The had a couple of moments in first half but apart from that everything was under control.
"I would never to come from a bad period directly into brilliant game. I was expecting this type of answer today and the answer was there."

Dropping Eden Hazard:

"Hazard was left out because we are conceding lots of goals.
"To defend better we need midfield to be worried just with central area of the pitch - not to be worried about compensation on the left or right and playing with Pedro and Willian means the midfield players don’t have to look to left or right because they know that they control very well.
"They did amazing defensive work - the allow midfield to be comfortable and to have performances like Ramires and Fabregas controlling centre of the pitch so it was just a tactical decision.
"Leaving super quality on bench but bringing tactical discipline and hoping that the team would be solid."

Moment for team:

"I told the players that this is not a moment to think about themselves or personal situation or moan or try to be selfish in approach.
"This is a moment for the team - just the team and nothing else. I asked them exactly that - to look at the picture in a different way to our normal situation where I have to make decisions to try and bring results and when they are back and we have better stability in our confidence levels then we go back to what we are."

Diego Costa back scoring:

"Yeah its good. The way he was working in past two weeks, he stayed with us over the international break and I knew he would bring something positive to us."

Loftus-Cheek substitution:

"I wanted more solidity in midfield. He is a solid, stable, mature player with fantastic in vision and the he analyse games and decisions in the game but without ball cannot compare tactically to others and in this moment one decision in favour of stability and control."

Start of rise?

"Today we were able to find these ingredients that we need when we are not playing at the top level -no concentration, defensive mistakes, you don’t defend well and lose ball and don’t have ten players fighting for it then you cannot win.
"We try to keep mentality and tactical attitude and at the same time with a little bit more happiness and confidence we can go in direction of what we are."

Team’s work rate:

"It's not just the work rate: defensive mistakes in matches where we are under control.
"We sometimes lost balance when central midfield player has to be worried about giving cover for one of the sides - it's like a blanket you pull one side and have your feet on the cold so we try to get that today and team was closed from one touchline to the other.
"When we lost ball we were closed. Then you have defensive line with more stability. John (Terry) and Zouma more comfortable in spite of playing against a phenomenal player in air but our team was solid."

Ivanovic replacement:

"I have other possibilities. I have to try make the best decision for my team, I try to analyse opposition and understand qualities of game and decide between the options I have."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho reveals replacement for the injured Branislav Ivanovic

JOSE MOURINHO is considering handing Baba Rahman his Premier League debut against Aston Villa.
Branislav Ivanovic was injured on international duty with Serbia and faces a month out with a damaged hamstring.
One option for Mourinho is moving Cesar Azpilicueta to right-back and handing summer signing Baba Rahman a start in defence.
The Ghanaian has made two appearances for Chelsea since joining from Augsburg in August, though he is yet to make his Premier League debut.
"I go back to one of the best defenders the Premier League has ever had, Ricardo Carvalho," said Mourinho.
Jose Mourinho has yet to decide who will replace the injured Branislav Ivanovic
Baba Rahman could play his first game in the Premier League
"He was in big trouble for three, four, five months.
"He said he couldn’t adapt to the change from the Portuguese League and the Champions League to the Premier League: the way attacking players were playing, the way he had to adapt and learn how to use his position and his body.
"He was a super player but it was hard for him for three or four months.
"It’s a problem of experience and being adapted to the Premier League.
"It’s depends on the characteristics of the player.
Ivanovic faces a month out after being injured with Serbia
"Baba is really good with the ball, he’s very fast, but he’s learning how we play and how we defend.
"The fact he came to us in the last days of the market took from him the possibility to work in pre-season, but he’s a good player for sure and we trust him."
Chelsea face Aston Villa this afternoon looking to bounce back from the defeat to Southampton in their last Premier League outing.
